Genus Description | Euonymus is a genus of approximately 175 species of deciduous, semi-evergreen, and everÂgreen shrubs, trees, and climbers found mostly in woodland and thickets, mainly in Asia. They are cultivated for their foliage, autumn color, and ornamental, often ribbed, winged, or lobed, spherical or almost spherical fruits, borne from autumn to winter, which split to reveal seeds with often colorful arils. Leaves are opposite (rarely alternate), simple, very variable in shape, and toothed or scalloped. Cymes of 3, sometimes 7-15, small, green or white, occasionally purple-red or red-brown flowers are borne in late spring or summer. Uses range from a shrub border to specimen plantings, and from hedging to groundcover. The japonicas specie (golden euonymus) is a dense, bushy, evergreen shrub or small, erect tree with obovate to narrowly oval, toothed, leathery, glossy , dark green leaves, to 2 ½ in long. It may produce spherical, white fruits. A good choice for hedging. |
Care Tips | |
Cultivation | Grow in any well- drained soil in full sun or light shade. If grown in full sun, they need moister soil. Shelter from cold, drying winds. Needs sun to enhance leaf variegation. Trim or lightly cut back shoots that spoil symmetry annually or after flowering. Remove dead and damaged growth in mid-spring. Dead head regularly if practical (unless fruit are desired). |
Pests and Diseases | Mites, scale insects, leaf miners, aphids, and mealybugs are common both outside and under glass. Witches’ broom, stem dieback, powdery mildew, and fungal spots are frequent problems. |
