Genus Description Cuphea is a genus of more than 250 species of annuals, short-lived, sometimes sub- shrubby evergreen perennials, and evergreen shrubs, from woodland clearings and pasture in S.E. US, Mexico, and subtropical and tropical Central and South America. Many species have sticky, glandular hairs. Mainly opposite, ovate to lance-shaped, entire or slightly toothed leaves are mid- to dark green. Irregularly shaped, tubular flowers are borne singly or in often-leafy racemes or panicles. The hyssopifolia specie (Mexican heather or false heather) is a bushy, rounded shrub with slender, downy stems and densely borne, mid- to dark green leaves. Produces short racemes of 1-3 light pink-purple, pink, or white flowers, to ½ in long, with 6 spreading petals, from the upper leaf axils, mainly from summer to autumn.
Care Tips
Cultivation Under glass, grow in soil-based potting mix in full light with shade from hot sun, in moderate humidity. In growth, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 3 or 4 weeks; water sparingly in winter. Outdoors, grow in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Cut back flowered shoots to within ½ - 1 in of previous year’s growth. Prune annually after flowering, if flowering on previous year’s growth, or in early or mid-spring, if flowering on current year’s growth.
Pests and Diseases Whiteflies and aphids can be problems. Prone to root rot, stem galls, dieback, powdery mildew, and a few leaf spots.
