Plant Profile
Botanical Name Trachelospermum jasminoides
Features Confederate jasmine, also known as star jasmine, is a hardy perennial vine that grows fragrant, white, star-like flowers among its glossy dark evergreen leaves. Because it is so easy to grow, it is a popular plant for xeriscaping. It is drought-tolerant and will thrive in almost any soil.
Exposure Full sun or partial shade
Hardiness Zone USDA Zones 9-10
Mature Size 28' Tall
Genus Description Trachelospermum is a genus of about 20 species of woody, evergreen, twining climbers found in woodland from India to Japan. They are grown for their attractive foliage and fragrant flowers. Opposite, lance-shaped to broadly ovate leaves are borne on stems that contain a milky latex. Small, salverform flowers, with cylindrical tubes and 5 spreading, slightly twisted lobes, are produced in terminal or axillary cymes, followed by pendent, pod-like fruits (seldom borne in areas with cool summers). Where marginally hardy, grow against a warm, sunny wall; where not hardy, grow in a cool greenhouse or as houseplants. Trachelospermum jasminoides (confederate jasmine or star jasmine) is a woody, evergreen, twining climber with oval, glossy, dark green leaves, to 4in long, turning bronze-red in winter. In summer, fragrant, pure white flowers, 1in across, are produced in terminal and axillary cymes.
Care Tips
Cultivation Outdoors, grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade; provide shelter from cold, drying winds. Under glass, grow in soil- based potting mix in full light with shade from hot sun. During the growing season, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. Water sparingly in winter.
Pests and Diseases Mushroom root rot and leaf spot sometimes occur.
